Abstract


The objectives of this research are: (1) to improve the conceptual mastery of the students in Grade X of State Vocational High School 5 Surakarta in Mechanical Technology subject matter through the implementation of PAKEM approach; and (2) to improve the skills of the students in Grade X of State Vocational High School 5 Surakarta in Mechanical Technology subject matter through the implementation of PAKEM approach. This research used the classroom action research with two cycles and with spiral phases as claimed by Hopkins (1985). Each cycle consisted of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of research were the students as many as 31 in Grade X TM D of State Vocational High School 5 of Surakarta. The data sources of research were a teacher and students. The data of research were collected through observation, documentation, and in-depth interview. The data of research were validated by using the content validity, and the items of questions and observation sheets were validated by expert judgment. They were analyzed by using the descriptive comparative model of analysis in the form of percentage. The results of research are as follows: 1) The implementation of PAKEM approach can improve the students’ conceptual mastery in Mechanical Technology subject matter. Prior to the treatment, the average score of the conceptual mastery 59. Following the treatment, it becomes 77.74 in cycle I and 85.32 in cycle II respectively. 2) The implementation of PAKEM approach can improve students’ skills in Mechanical Technology subject matter. Prior to the treatment, the percentage of their conceptual mastery is 51.92%. Following the treatment, it becomes 56.96% in cycle I and 80.19% in cycle II respectively. The indicators of their skills include speaking, listening, creativity, and competency. Thus, the application of PAKEM approach (active, creative, effective, and exciting learning) can improve the conceptual mastery Mechanical Technology subject matter of the students in Grade X of State Vocational High School 5 Surakarta in Academic Year 2014/2015.
