Abstract


Abstract: This study aims to improve the reading ability through thue use of  semantics mapping. This study was an classroom  action research and conducted  in three cycles. The participants were nineth studets of class E of SMP Negeri 27 Surakarta. The result showed that there was an improvement in the percentace of  formulating  the semantics mapping, reading activity and ability. The effective learning procedure was as follows. The students surveyed the text, formulated semantics mapping with questions word 5W + 1 H which organized on the board underheadings, memorized the semantics mapping, read the text intensively that they could use their maps as a review of information gained, stated the information about topics in the semantics mapping, and answered the questions (take a test).  The conclusion of this research is when students have a purpose for reading a selection, they find that purpose not only directs their reading towards a goal, but helps to focus their attention.
