THE MATERIAL COMPATIBILITY AND COMMUNICATIVE EXERCISES IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK “PROGRESS”

Abstract


This research investigates the degree of compatibilty of the language skills materials in “Progress” with the indicators required by School based Curriculum and to see whether or not the exercises are communicative. In collecting the data, the researcher uses document analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the percentage of the appropriateness of the skills
developed in the textbook “Progress” is 59.22% (listening: 62.85%; speaking: 59.38%; reading: 47.06%; writing: 63.16%). It means that the textbook is compatible with the School-based Curriculum in developing English skills. In addition, the data also reveals that 62.5% of the exercises are communicative. The two findings indicate that this book is good.
